Olimpia Zagnoli is an Italian illustrator from Milan. We were shown some of her work when Nous Vous were introducing the brief to the class and I really liked how bold and bright her illustrations are. I can see how she can be used for editorial pieces, her images make you look and intrigued about the article. They’re really eye catching and soft and I think she must have a lot of fun creating her illustrations because they look very fun.
When looking up Andrew Rae from the list of artists recommended to us to look at for the editorial brief I instantly loved his work. His cartoon style is really cool and the way he uses layers characters upon characters makes for really visually interesting work. I think I am more of a fan of his line work but his works are all cool and all tell a story. I love his attention the amount of detail that goes into all his illustrations.
Luke Best is a London based illustrator and we were pointed in his direction to look at for our editorial brief and I can see how his works would work well as editorial illustrations. He has a very colourful style and his works look great in colour. I think the brightness and vividness make them visually striking. I like the use of layers or overlapping in his pieces, it gives some depth to the flatness of the illustrations.
There was an exhibition at the Foundling museum in the cafe by Lemn Sissay. On the walls of the cafe he had written in vinyl was the names of loads of fictional characters from well known books and stories who were either orphaned, abandoned, a Foundling or was adopted. You can see all the names of the characters here.
As research for my FMP I went along with my mum to the Foundling Museum in Bloomsbury on a sunny Sunday afternoon. My mum was the one who found it and it was a really interesting trip. The museum is part of the Foundling hospital which was founded by Thomas Coram after campaigning for it for 17 years. From 1741 when the first babies were brought in to 1954 when the last pupil was placed in foster care. The hospital cared for and educated 25,000 children.
While researching for my dissertation I was looking at the mermaid in the modern day and how it appears these days and I found out that there is a Mermaid Parade at Coney Island every year that celebrates the beginning of summer. It usually takes place in June. This year will be the 34th annual Mermaid Parade on June 18th 2016.
It is an art parade and the largest in the united states founded in 1983 with the goals of bringing mythology to life (especially to those living streets names Mermaid and Neptune). The event is a celebration of ancient mythology and honky-tonk rituals of the seaside and showcases over 3,000 creative individuals.
For my reflective diary for Design Comp I’ve been looking at layouts, mainly publication layouts as I will be creating a form of publication, book, magazine etc. I took to pinterest as I find they have a huge arrange of layouts on there and some really amazing design. It’s been very inspiring and having a pinterest board is a good way of compiling a lot of things like a mood board digitally and easy to go through later. Here is a pinterest board I made on layouts.
My latest idea for my FMP is to create a children’s/ young adult picture book using the characters of myself and Joanne and illustrate the two paths we have taken but still ending up being the same person, illustrating that you can be what you want to be, no matter what path you choose, you are still you. I like the idea and I think it will work better having that message or storyline under my story, it makes my project more relatable to others.
I went along to Foyles bookstore to look at children’s books, mainly to look at the illustrations and the different styles and ways of illustrating stories. Here are some that caught my eye:
This is the tumblr blog I keep to post inspiration to be able to go back to reference too or for others to see what I’m into. It’s kind of like an active mood board on things that I like and influence and inspire my work although I haven’t updated it in a long time everything is still relevant and I will be trying to update it more often. Feel free to go check it out! Follow it and share the sinpiration!
